The Ava Bears used the Ava Homecoming Game to end their own skid while continuing the Salem Tigers’.
Ava rode the legs and arm of four-year starting quarterback Aiden Lane in posting a 42-14 victory in SCA play Friday, Sept. 27 in the Bears’ Homecoming Game.
The Tigers fell to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the SCA. Ava snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference action.
It was all Ava over the first three quarters, as the Bears built a 42-0 cushion. Ava got two touchdowns in each of the first three periods - the first three on Lane TD passes and the last three on runs.
Salem got both of its touchdowns in the fourth quarter, on breakaway runs of 80 yards and 75 yards by junior running back-turned-QB Sylis DuBois. Alton May also ran in a two-point conversion.
“They did what we’ve seen them do on films,” said Salem head coach Neal Myers of Ava. “We just got our eyes caught in the backfield. (Lane) is more of a run threat. Their plays we had seen; we just didn’t read our keys.
“We went into the game feeling like it was very winnable. But somewhere in there we just didn’t do our job.”
Salem finished with 236 yards of total offense - 194 on the ground. Most of that was totaled by DuBois, who is filling in at quarterback with an injury to senior Hayden Ragsdale. DuBois rushed for 163 yards on six carries and hit on two-of-three passes for 42 yards.
Defensively, freshman linebacker Drake Smith paced the Tigers with 13 tackles while senior lineman Cason Malone added nine.
This week Salem hosts Willow Springs in the Tiger Homecoming Game Friday, Oct. 3. Kickoff at Schuchardt Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
The Willow Springs Bears are 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the SCA. Last week Willow Springs lost at Mountain View Liberty 51-0. The Bears have been outscored a combined 105-14 in their last two games.
“They are a wide-open spread offense,” Myers said of Willow Springs. “They’re a lot better than they have been. It’s definitely a game we’ve got to be ready for.”
Last season Salem defeated Willow Springs 28-14.
