October 15, 2024 – A seven-year-old girl in
Independence got behind the wheel and rolled
her school bus into another one. She claimed
the bus driver wanted her to learn about
emergency procedures.
October 16, 1886 – The Kansas City Journal
carried an article reminding its readers that, “It is
illegal for aliens to vote before having been
admitted to full citizenship.”
October 17, 1807 – Birthday of William B.
Waddell of Lexington, MO. He was a co-
founder of a huge freighting firm, the Overland
Stage Co., and the Pony Express.
October 18, 1923 – Raymond Henry Littge was
born in Altenberg, MO. In World War II he shot
down 10 enemy planes, destroyed 13 more on
the ground and even shot down 3 V-2 rockets as
they flew toward England.
October 19, 1865 – The Missouri Democrat
newspaper reported that a trapper, James
Lumley, had seen a “bright luminous body” in
the skies moving toward the east. Then there
was a loud explosion and the smell of sulphur in
the air. He found the large object which was
divided into compartments and had something
like hieroglyphs on its surface. He also
discovered glass & “strange stains.”
October 20, 1803 – The U.S. Senate approved
the Louisiana Purchase and Missouri became a
part of the United States
October 21, 1909 – Five-year-old George
Spurbeck fell into his family’s well near
Richmond, MO. He fell 30 ft. down into 14 ft.
of water but held to the stones on the side of the
well until his mother could climb down and
rescue him.
