The Salem Tiger baseball squad improved is record to 3-0-1 overall with a pair of victories last week.
Monday, March 24 the Tigers traveled to Steelville and posted an 8-4 victory. And Thursday, March 27 Salem hosted Ellington and won 7-3.
This week Salem was slated to play at Owensville Monday, host the Licking Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and travel to Potosi Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. start.
March 27 – SHS 7, Ellington 3: The Ellington Whippets took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning.
However, Salem quickly took control with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The Tigers then added three more runs in the third inning. It stayed 7-1 until Ellington added a solo run in the fifth. The Whippets added one more run in the seventh before falling short.
Salem outhit Ellington 8-7.
Senior Roy Stevens slammed a two-run home run and scored twice for the Tigers while senior Bryar Bobbitt was 3-for-3 with two RBI; senior Corby Ball doubled; senior Jaxon Raulston had two hits and an RBI; senior Kash Howard a hit, RBI and run; senior Blake Edwards scored two runs, and senior Cayden Moody and freshman Kahne Barred each scored one.
Moody and Howard each stole a base.
Ball was the starting and winning pitcher, allowing two earned runs while scattering seven hits and walking none and striking out five. Stevens threw the final two innings, striking out four.
March 24 – SHS 8, Steelville 4: Salem put up two runs in the top of the first inning and led the rest of the way. The Steelville Cardinals trimmed the Tiger lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second. Each team plated a solo run in the third to make it 3-2. Salem then pulled away with four more runs in the fourth inning.
Steelville trimmed its deficit to 7-4 with two runs in the fifth but could not score again. Salem added the final run in the seventh.
Salem outhit Steelville 11-6 and each team made three fielding errors.
Moody went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases while Stevens had two hits, an RBI and run; Edwards two hits and scored a run; junior Dannon Berry a hit, two RBI and a run; Ball a hit and three RBI; Bobbitt a hit and run; Raulston a hit; sophomore Sylis DuBois scored a run and stole a base, and junior Hayden Ragsdale stole a base.
Bobbitt was the winning pitcher, working 4 2/3 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks while fanning five. Berry finished up on the mound, not allowing a run over 2 1/3 innings while walking one and striking out five.
