Just a couple of words now that Representative Jason Smith has gotten the GOP talking points about the Affordable Care Act (ACA.)
Prior to President Barack Obama, the uninsured rate amongst Americans was sixteen percent. Thanks to Obamacare, and the Covid expansion of its benefits, we have halved that. Thousands of Americans lives have been saved in the years since.
But too often many people assume that just because they don't get their insurance through the ACA exchanges, they do not also benefit from Obamacare.
Smith is happy to criticize the issues with the ACA without offering any actual solutions. If he was serious about reforming our healthcare system, he would join Bernie Sanders and AOC in pushing for Medicare-for-All. Instead, he claims insurance has gone up because of burdensome government regulations.
Someone needs to ask him which regulations.
Is he talking about the requirement to cover reproductive care? Or the fact that families can now claim their children on their insurance plans up to the age of 26?
Or is he talking about the fact that insurance companies can no longer deny you coverage because of a pre-existing condition or jack your insurance rates through the roof because of that.
Face it, there's no one in this town over the age of 30 who doesn't have a pre-existing condition.
I suggest Smith stop talking out of his rear and actually produce some details on what he really wants to do to our healthcare system. Because I have a feeling he's going to make things worse.
