(StatePoint) It might surprise you to know that Kentucky is within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population. The six interstate highways and dozens of superbly maintained state routes make access to the Bluegrass State all the easier and entirely perfect for a weekend adventure.
Here are just a few of the places that shouldn’t be overlooked when planning a Kentucky “microtrip.”
When traveling through southern Kentucky on Interstate 75, be sure to set aside some time to explore Somerset, located about 40 minutes west of the interstate on the banks of Lake Cumberland.
Somerset is the perfect place for almost any water activity, and due to its massive fleet of houseboats, proudly boasts the title, “Houseboat Capital of the World.” Houseboating is just one of the many fun and exciting hobbies to take part in on Lake Cumberland. Whether it is fishing, kayaking, tubing or just floating, there is something for everyone.
In addition to the lake, Somerset has no shortage of things to do. The golf course in nearby General Burnside Island State Park is a fun and challenging Trevino-Bennett-designed course. It features several holes overlooking the lake, and is mere steps away from the luxurious Woodson Bend Resort condos.
For music fans looking for the Bluegrass State’s hidden gems, venture out to Central City in southwest Kentucky. There, at the Muhlenberg Music & History Museum, you will learn about the small town’s ties to music legends John Prine and the Everly Brothers.
While neither Prine nor the Everlys were permanent residents of Central City, they all had deep family connections to the area and visited often throughout their lives. In fact, one of Prine’s biggest hits, “Paradise,” warmly describes Muhlenberg County and its idyllic scenery and vibrant culture.
After touring the museum, head up the street to see the life-sized bronze statues of the three musicians located in Festival Park.
In northern Kentucky, just an hour’s drive from Newport, is Augusta, a delightful riverside town.
Augusta offers a genuinely charming and picturesque escape on the water. This historic small town is perfect for a relaxing getaway where you can stroll along Riverside Drive, browse the shops, and visit the house once owned and occupied by legendary singer Rosemary Clooney. Today it is a museum that features memorabilia from her life and career, including costumes from the movie “White Christmas,” and a room dedicated to her nephew, actor George Clooney.
No visit is complete without a stop at the Augusta Distillery or the historic Baker-Bird Winery & Distillery, where one can delve into the area’s rich distilling heritage and enjoy a tasting experience. The town’s slower pace and beautiful waterfront make it a true Kentucky treasure.
