In The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon‘s third — and penultimate! — outing, Daryl and Carol (Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride) are strangers in a strange land yet again.
After leaving France in the Season 2 ender of AMC’s drama, and taking a quick pitstop to stamp their apocalypse passports in England in the Season 3 opener, the survivor pals will find themselves shipwrecked in Spain, where they’ll encounter a new culture and way of life, and some very interesting characters.
Above, TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek scene at the season’s second episode “La Ofrenda,” airing on September 14. In the installment, Daryl and Carol are seeking shelter and safety in what appears to be a peaceful village. According to The Walking Dead‘s Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple, in Solaz Del Mar, you can actually trust that things are as they seem.
“There’s communities that people go into on various shows, Fear the Walking Dead or World Beyond, and they go in and everything seems cool…and it’s not cool,” Gimple says. “One thing I will say about Solaz Del Mar is that they put their cards on the table. There’s things going on there, but they aren’t secretive about them. It’s been integrated into the community life. So I find it very interesting the way [the village] is presented. I like it that our people come upon a situation that’s normal to the people that they encounter. I think there’s a real different flavor there.”
In the sneak peek clip above, Daryl accompanies an injured Carol as they enter Solaz Del Mar with Roberto (Hugo Arbués) and Justina (Candela Saitta), two young villagers in love, who are struggling under the rule of the town’s leader, Federico (Óscar Jaenada). Fede, who enters the scene from a position of power, of course, isn’t someone who instills a lot of trust in Carol or Daryl. Even as Justina begs her Uncle Fede to help the injured Carol, you can see it’s not something he wants to do.
“Fede is designed to be a complicated guy,” teases showrunner David Zabel. “He becomes an antagonist pretty soon. He doesn’t start out exactly that way, but he’s trying to lead this community and hold this community together, and has kind of made a deal with the devil, which is what we start to uncover pretty early on in Episodes 2 and 3. He has a great story of his own, which is an emotional story, but he also becomes at war with these strangers in town who are Daryl and Carol.”
First, they’re going to have to get Carol fixed up and find somewhere to stay. How will Fede and Solaz Del Mar treat the Americans? You’ll have to watch to find that out.
