It will be a situation where most of the players on the Salem High boys’ golf team will be learning something new about the game every time they take a club out of their golf bag.
Indeed, most of the Tigers on the squad this spring are novice golfers.
“I think there are a bunch of the kids who didn’t have clubs when we started this year,” said first-year Salem golf coach Neal Myers. “This year they will be learning the game. The more we can get the clubs in their hands and hit the ball, the better we’ll be.”
The Tigers still have some time to get in practice rounds, as they are slated to open the season by hosting the Salem Open April 1 at Spring Creek Golf Club.
Myers has 14 players on the roster, but just one varsity player back. Junior Daniel Black is that lone varsity player returning to anchor the squad.
The only senior on the roster is Gunner Mahurin.
And the top newcomer figures to be freshman Aiden Summers.
Right now those three have a grasp on Tiger varsity positions.
“What we’re looking for right now are the last two varsity spots as well as the alternate,” Myers said.
Here is the Tigers’ schedule:
