The second-seeded Salem high softball team was clipped by third-seeded Licking 8-7 in the semifinals of the Missouri Class 2 District 3 Tournament, held Monday, May 12 at Potosi.
In the other semifinal game May 12, top-seeded West County defeated fourth-seeded host Potosi 6-2.
West County shut out Licking 9-0 in the championship game May 13.
This week West County (16-5) was to play Ava (20-4) Tuesday in Class 2 State Tournament Quarterfinal action.
Salem ends the season with a 12-12 record.
In the semifinals, Salem grabbed the early lead, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Licking Lady Wildcats cut their deficit in half with two runs in the top of the second frame then took the lead for good with a four-run third inning. Licking added two more runs in the fourth inning to grab an 8-4 advantage.
The Lady Tigers closed the gap with single runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before falling a run short.
Salem outhit Licking 9-7. Each team committed four fielding errors.
Senior Reagan DuBois belted a home run and double while driving in three runs and scoring twice for the Lady Tigers while sophomore Bailey Mahurin and junior Shaylee Thomas each had two hits, an RBI and a run; junior Alexis White doubled, and sophomore Raven Gillam had a hit and scored a run.
Freshman Alaina Norris went the distance in the pitching circle for Salem, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and one walk while fanning seven over seven innings.
