St. James erupted for six runs in the top of the seventh inning and handed Salem an 11-7 non-conference defeat Aug. 27 in Salem.
St. James plated four runs in the top of the first inning, only to see Salem tally two in the bottom of the first and cut its deficit to 4-3 with another run in the second frame.
STJ got a run in the top of the fifth and Salem would tie it up 5-5 with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
The game remained tied entering the seventh inning, when STJ got six.
Salem rallied for two in the bottom of the seventh before the comeback attempt ended.
St. James outhit Salem 11-7. Salem had four errors and STJ three.
For Salem, junior Nina Howard and sophomore Reggie Parks each had two hits, while senior Lexy Woolman and freshman Chloe Bonner each had a hit and scored a run, and Woolman, senior Brooke Adams, junior Addie Konkel, Parks and freshman Isabella Jadwin each had an RBI.
Konkel was the losing hurler for Salem, allowing 11 runs – nine earned – on 11 hits and three walks while fanning five.
Junior Audrey Marcee had a huge game at the plate for St. James, clubbing a triple, two singles and driving in six runs. Also for STJ seniors Hunter Pitts and Scout Paulus each had two hits and scored two runs.
Marcee was the winning pitcher, going the distance and allowing seven runs – five earned – on seven hits and four walks while striking out seven.
Salem was scheduled to host Alton on Thursday, Aug. 30 but that game was washed out.
This week Salem is to play at Ava (4:30 p.m.) today (Tuesday) and at Vienna (5 p.m.) Thursday.
