The Salem Lady Tigers played host to the Thayer Lady Bobcats Thursday night, Jan. 13 in an SCA contest. Throughout the first half neither team could capture and maintain the momentum, but that would change in the second half. With a combination of pressure defense and hot shooting, the Lady Tigers took control and turned a 29-28 halftime lead into a 77-56 victory.
The win improves Salem’s record to 8-7 on the season and 1-2 in the SCA. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to host the Owensville Dutchgirls Tuesday.
Thursday, Salem would hit a program-record 13 three-pointers en route to the victory, with Ashton Bowers tying the single-game school record of seven made threes, becoming the fifth Lady Tiger to achieve the feat.
Salem would jump out to an early lead in the first quarter, but Thayer responded with a run of its own to tie the game at 14-14 after one. Savannah Manthey picked up nine points in the quarter, Ashton Bowers scored three points, and Avery Erway added two points. The Lady Bobcats continued their run into the second quarter, taking a 21-16 lead midway through. The Lady Tigers would push back to end the quarter though, reclaiming a 29-28 lead at halftime. Bowers led the way in the second with eleven points, while Erway scored four points.
Salem kept the momentum going into the third quarter, outscoring Thayer 27-15 to take a 56-43 lead into the fourth. Bowers picked up another nine points in the third quarter, including her seventh three-pointer to tie the record. Bella Jadwin would begin to heat up in the third quarter, picking up seven points, to go along with another five points from Manthey and three points apiece from Erway and Fayth Kaminski. The Lady Tigers continued to stretch their lead in the fourth quarter with a 21-13 effort to win by the final score of 77-56. Jadwin would have the hot hand in the fourth, scoring nine points; Erway picked up four points; Kyleigh Wood hit a three-pointer to set a new team record for threes in a game; Savannah Manthey and Allison Manthey scored two points apiece; and Kaminski added one more point.
