Salem’s baseball squad evened its record at 2-2 by winning a pair of games last week.
March 21 the Tigers shut out the Steelville Cardinals in a home pitching duel 1-0. And Thursday Salem easily won at Ellington 17-4.
This week the Tigers were slated to host Owensville Monday, play at Licking Tuesday and host Potosi Thursday (4:30 p.m.).
March 21
Salem 1, Steelville 0
The game’s lone run came in the bottom of the second inning when courtesy runner sophomore Brenden Hanger scored on an RBI from sophomore Wyatt Martin.
Pitching dominated, as the two teams combined for just six hits.
Senior right-hander Garrett Connell went the distance on the mound for Salem to gain the victory, scattering two hits and one walk over seven innings while striking out 12.
The Tigers got four hits – one each from Connell, senior Collin Heavin, senior Jimmy Barton and sophomore Trethan Richter. Heavin also stole a base.
March 24
Salem 17, Ellington 4
The game was tied after five innings. The Tigers plated two runs in the top of the first inning and one in the fourth. Ellington got a run in the bottom of the first and took a 3-2 lead with two in the third.
Going into the sixth frame tied 3-3, Salem took over, scoring four runs in the sixth inning and then pulling away by erupting for 10 in the seventh.
In the seventh inning Salem took advantage of a slew of walks issued by Ellington pitching. Ellington got a run in the bottom of the seventh before falling way short.
Salem outhit Ellington 7-5 and took advantage of 21 walks.
Connell pounded a home run, single, scored three times, walked twice and drove in five runs.
Also for Salem, Heavin had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI; sophomore Kaiden DuBois two hits, three runs scored, three walks and an RBI; senior Korben Barred a hit, RBI and three runs scored; Richter two RBI, two runs scored and three walks; senior Isaac Westerman two RBI, a run and three walks; junior Bronson Crocker a RBI and run, and Martin an RBI.
Barred pitched 2.2 innings, allowing no earned runs, one hit, two walks and four strikeouts, and Crocker 4.1 innings with an earned run, four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
In the JV game Salem won a three-inning contest 2-0. The Tiger JV squad scored single runs in the first and third innings and outhit Ellington 3-0. Austin Courtney and Roy Stevens each had a double and Kash Howard singled and had an RBI. Stevens and Michno scored the Salem runs.
Corbett Ball pitched two innings and Blake Edwards one, combining for two walks and seven strikeouts.
