The Salem Tigers needed a strong second half to fend off the Sullivan Eagles 50-33 Tuesday, Dec. 19.
The Tigers improved to 4-4 on the season.
Bryson May chipped in four early points as Newburg took a 10-2 advantage in the first quarter. Sullivan roared back in the second, outscoring Salem 21-8 to claim the lead 23-18 at the break.
May fired in seven in the third period to lead the Tigers in their second-half comeback effort. Landon Richter aided the effort with seven in the fourth quarter. Tre Richter added five and Kaiden Gately three in the final quarter to extend the gap to double-digits.
Salem led 45-32 with two minutes to play and outscored Sullivan 5-1 the rest of the way.
May paced Salem with 13 points, while L. Richter had 12 and T. Richter 11.
Salem swept Sullivan in all three contests. The JV Tigers stomped Sullivan 58-27 while the freshman team won 49-36.
Braiden Gapsch poured in 21 points to lead the JV squad.
Salem was to compete in the 16-team Cabool Holiday Tournament Dec. 26-29 at Cabool High School.
