The short-handed Salem High School cross country team competed in the Steve Waggoner Invitational Thursday, Sept. 11 at the Willow Springs Golf Course.
In the boys’ 5,000-meter race Mountain Grove was the team champion with 61 points and Logan-Rogersville was runner-up with 65. Salem was eighth with 222.
Landon Fawcett of Logan-Rogersville was the boys’ medalist with a time of 17:47.9.
In the girls’ meet Salem’s Zoey Elliott finished second individually with a time of 23:33.4. Houston’s Lyla Huffman was girls’ medalist at 20:58.4.
Houston was the girls’ team winner.
The Salem boys have been waiting on some of their runners to get enough practices in to be eligible. The Tigers are expected to field a full team starting this week.
The Lady Tigers have two state meet hopefuls, Ella Schlag and Kenndi Wallace, battling injuries and could be sidelined for some time, or the entire season.
“We are hoping for better news, as both are scheduled to see their doctors soon,” said Salem coach Will Hubbs. “Also, Danica Garner has been out with the flu. We hope to get some more girls out to help us soon,
“But a huge bright spot so far has been Zoey Elliott. I knew she would be good, but I did not think she would start out this well. She has finished second in both of her races so far. I am very proud of how hard she has worked to get these great results.”
This week Salem was slated to run in the Houston Invitational Tuesday and the Steelville Invitational Thursday.
