While historically, fire sprinklers have been most commonly used in commercial buildings, many of today's building codes now require new homes to have fire sprinklers installed to combat the modern reality of home fires.
However, there are some communities where home fire sprinklers have been omitted from building codes, putting those residents at risk. "Fire sprinklers buy residents time to get out of homes while our responders work to get there, but when our office first took a run at trying to initiate a local fire sprinkler ordinance, it was met with a lot of opposition from builders and developers," said Kevin Bergstrom, deputy fire marshal at the Camas/Washougal Fire Department in Camas, Washington. Bergstrom and his crew helped developers see the value of home fire sprinklers. "Our biggest success has been six home fire sprinkler saves. The most recent was a lithium-ion battery in a charger, where one fire sprinkler extinguished the fire. I think every community can be successful in protecting their citizens."
