Parker signed a mayoral proclamation Wednesday, April 30 declaring the month of May to be Poppy Month in Salem in honor of the nation’s veterans. The proclamation calls upon citizens of Salem to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom by wearing the Memorial Poppy during May. The poppy became the official flower of The American Legion in 1920 to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during World War I, as the flower flourished all over Europe. John Hewkin has been a sports fan since he was a kid. He’s played, coached and been a fan of sports. I was a sports writer for 15 years before moving back to Missouri, but to this day you will still find me in my man cave a lot of nights and weekends watching something that requires a ball.
