Two Salem residents received Leaders Honor Roll recognition Feb. 12 during the annual meeting of Dent County University of Missouri Extension held at The Gathering Place in Grace Community Church.
Craig Hall and Nancy Major received the awards that highlight volunteerism for the organization.
Hall was nominated for his efforts at the Salem Community Garden. He has been a part of the garden since it started and takes part in weed-eating, leading volunteer workdays, helping new gardeners and sharing his harvest. He also serves on the garden advisory committee.
Major is in her 10th year as the Spring Creek 4-H Club leader. The club has more than doubled its enrollment the past five years, and she serves as project leader for photography and scrapbooking and added gardening this year. Her club was involved with the 4-H One Million Trees Project, planting 250 dogwood and redbud trees at Cedar Grove Cemetery and Salem Public Library.
After a welcome and invocation from Youth Program Associate Linda Shelton and special introductions by County Engagement Specialist in Community Economic Development Sarah Hultine Massengale, those at the banquet heard a program about Missouri’s upcoming bicentennial celebration in 2021.
Kathleen Seale, senior archivist with the State Historical Society of Missouri, talked about plans for the bicentennial, as well as how communities can get involved. A lot of information on the bicentennial is available online at missouri2021.org.
Following the recognition of Leaders Honor Roll, council president Chris Welch announced that the Jarrod Simpson family was named 2018 Dent County Farm Family. The Simpsons were unable to attend the banquet.
Welch then recognized council members, including newly elected members Karin Casper, Michael Dunn, Chris Holliday, Tracy Strange and Kay Wortman. Re-elected were Thom Haines, Lane Howard, Kendra Mobray and Krystal Sims.
Outgoing board members are Jason Edwards, Karla Tiefenthaler, Kark Tohlen, Teel Wisdom and Traci Wulff. Other council members are Jason Stotler, Bob Parsons, Stevie Patterson, Patty Paul, Janelle Blair, Alan McBride, Mark Freeman and Dan Riley. Appointed members are Farm Bureau’s Jim Freeman, City of Salem’s Brad Nash and Dent County Commissioner Gary Larson.
