State representative Ron Copeland has decided not to file for another term, he told The Salem News Monday.
Copeland, a Republican who represents Dent and Crawford counties in District 120, was first elected in November 2020 and has served two terms. He plans to serve the rest of his term, which runs through the end of the year.
“I want to thank everyone for their support for the past four years,” he said. “During my time as your representative, I have worked hard for our district and worked to make life better for the community.
“But after many discussions with my family, I have decided not to file for reelection as your state representative.”
Prior to serving in the legislature, Copeland was a Missouri State Trooper for 28 years, retiring as a master sergeant, and a Missouri National Guardsman for six years. He studied criminal justice at Central Missouri State University and Lincoln University.
“I have dedicated 32 years to serving this community as a state trooper and a state representative,” he said. “I am proud and honored to have served. I have put serving ahead of my family throughout these years, and I have decided to focus on spending time with my family.”
Copeland, who has a wife, Denise, and four children, added that he will continue to serve as state representative for the remainder of the year and invites residents to “feel free to reach out if you need anything.”
Two candidates have filed for District 120 representative, including John W. Hewkin of Cuba as a Republican and Jen Tracy of Bourbon as a Democrat. Filing ends March 26. The primary election is August 6 and the general election Nov. 5.
