Salem Arts Council recently released the arts events taking place for the remainder of the year.
The council does not require masks but does ask for social distancing and common sense during the activities.
Starting in January 2021, the Creative Arts Center is offering three regular activities (art parties, group workshops, etc.) for $50.
The following events will take place at the Creative Arts Center, behind ONCRC on Hwy. 19 in Salem.
Nov. 13 – 6-8 p.m.
Sailor’s Whisk
Small brooms in the days of wind and sail were often made from bits of rope. One such boom was called a Sailor’s Whisk. Wayne Douglass will teach this traditional naval skill. Using rope, each broom whisk will be formed using special knots that make each unique, resulting in a useful item or a memorable gift! All supplies and instruction will be provided for anyone from eight to eighty to learn and take home a finished product. An amazing special price of $5.00 per person will cover all costs to make a whisk.
Nov. 20 – 6-8 p.m.
Kitchen Witch
Learn to make an old-fashion Kitchen Witch. She is a good witch rumored to keep kitchen calamities at bay. Led by Suzanne Douglass, use straw to twist, braid, and fold into a fun piece of folk art. This is an ancient art, particularly popular with the common folk of yore. All supplies and instruction will be provided for anyone from eight to eighty to learn and take home a finished product.
Dec. 11
6-8 p.m.
Welsh Fan House Blessing
Come learn how to make a Welsh straw fan. The Welsh fan is a traditional type of house blessing from the border counties between England and Wales. In meaning it is very much like the American tradition of hanging a horseshoe for good fortune. Led by Suzanne Douglass, use straw to twist, braid, and fold into a lovely piece of folk art. This is an ancient art, particularly popular with the common folk of yore. All supplies and instruction will be provided for anyone from eight to eighty to learn and take home a finished product.
Dec. 18

Jing-a-Ling Art Party
Take a break from the holiday business and come ring with friends at our winter art party. Come paint a fun seasonal scene to take home. Led by professional artist Danielle Norris, this event for adults does NOT require any talent or previous experience, just a happy spirit and willingness to try. For $25, all supplies are provided—acrylic paints, aprons, brushes, canvas, easel. Bring your favorite beverages, snacks, and people, and prepare to have a great time making a lovely piece of art for your home or to give away.
