Friday, Dec. 5
Start time of 6 p.m.
Line up anytime from 4:30 until 5:45 p.m. Keep in mind the first 12 spots are reserved for Grand Marshal, servicemen and women, etc.
Grand Marshal is the Salem Special Olympics Team, coached by Krystal Sims.
The team is for individuals with developmental disabilities, ages 8 and up. Athletes participate in basketball, track, and bowling. The Salem team competes in area competitions. Salem is a Unified Champion school, which means the teams are inclusive when participating in sports, such as basketball. Teams include both Special Olympics athletes and general education students.
School staff fundraise for Special Olympics through the Polar Plunge each February. The main fundraising event is Keeping Christmas at Home, a craft and vendor fair at the Upper Elementary each December.

John Hewkin has been a sports fan since he was a kid. He’s played, coached and been a fan of sports. I was a sports writer for 15 years before moving back to Missouri, but to this day you will still find me in my man cave a lot of nights and weekends watching something that requires a ball.
