Allison Skinner, a veteran of nearly 20 years in journalism was recently appointed Publisher and General Manager of Phelps County Focus, The Salem News, and Pulaski County Weekly. Skinner served as news writer and editor, photographer, sports editor and general manager at the West Plains Daily Quill from 2002-2021.
“When I first became a beat reporter, I was terrified,” she described, of landing her first job as a staff writer and photographer in 2002. “I had no idea what I'd agreed to do. I am grateful for a career in which I can visit with people on every topic—from about how they met the love of their life, to what brings them joy, to finding success in their chosen fields. I've taken flight in a homemade helicopter, interviewed prominent leaders and well-known artists, and helped those suffering loss.
“It didn't matter who I was talking to, my job was always to listen and tell their story to others, whether it was the governor of the state of Missouri, or a farmer with the largest potato he's ever grown. I treat everyone with respect and curiosity.”
Skinner is a longtime member of the Missouri Press and Ozark Press Associations, and received numerous awards over the years, including first place news award by The Associated Press for photography. She was also active in West Plains Sunrise and Noon Rotary clubs.
“When I look back at my career, I still see their faces,” she said of working at the newspaper. “One 95-year-old woman's face lit up when I asked her what her thoughts were when she first met her husband of 75 years. She said, 'thought he was cute, and I still do.’ This is why I love my job, and I am so thankful to have the opportunity to tell the stories and highlight the success of those living in this area. My mentors have said, ‘the ink gets in your blood.’ They were right.
"You have to be curious, care about your community and the people in it. I’m thankful for the staff who work hard every single day to put this paper together. I’m thankful to have a great job to tell the stories of the community, of my community, here in the Ozarks, a special place like no other, a place we all call home.”
