Each day in the Salem R-80 School District, classrooms are energized with instruction, collaboration, and compassion. Central to this vibrant dynamic is a dedicated group of professionals whose efforts often go unnoticed: our substitute teachers.
As we observe Substitute Teacher Appreciation Day on Nov. 21, I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the essential contributions these individuals make in ensuring the smooth operation of our schools and the uninterrupted learning experiences of our students.
Substitute teachers fulfill roles that extend beyond merely “covering a class.” They provide stability, uphold classroom structure, and foster consistency—enabling our regular educators to pursue training, professional growth, and personal well-being, confident that their students are in capable hands. I truly believe that becoming a substitute teacher gives you a greater appreciation for the tireless efforts and hard work of our educators day in and day out.
To our substitutes: we extend our sincere gratitude for your dedication, flexibility, and care for our students. You are an integral part of our educational community, and your positive influence extends well beyond the days you serve.
To our community: if you know someone who serves as a substitute teacher, please take a moment this week to thank them. Their work often happens quietly, but its importance cannot be overstated.
Interested in becoming a substitute in Missouri?
We are always looking for reliable, caring adults to join our substitute teaching team here at Salem R-80. If you’ve ever thought about stepping into a classroom and making a difference, this could be the right opportunity for you. Being a substitute teacher is a great way to discover whether teaching could be your future career! At Salem R-80, we have hired several former substitutes who went on to fulfill the requirements to become certified teachers.
Below are the current requirements for substitute teachers in Missouri:
• If you already hold a valid Missouri teaching certificate, you may serve as a substitute and do not need to apply for a separate substitute certificate.
For others, there are two primary pathways to qualify for a substitute certificate:
• Option A: Earn 36 semester hours of college credit at a regionally accredited institution.
• Option B: Hold a high school diploma (or equivalent) and complete a 20-hour state-approved substitute training program. This 20-hour training is completed online and at your own pace. The cost is only $99.
A new criminal fingerprint/background check is required before a certificate can be issued.
If you’re interested and want to learn more about how to apply, or to discuss how to get started locally, please contact the Salem R-80 District Office at 573-729-6642 or reach out to any of our school buildings where you would like to substitute. We’ll be glad to walk you through the process and welcome you to our dedicated team of substitute educators.
In education, it truly takes all of us, teachers, support staff, administrators, and substitutes alike, to make a difference in the lives of children. On Substitute Teacher Appreciation Day, we celebrate those who step in, step up, and help our schools keep learning moving forward.
