Today, the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) issued a forceful bulletin to halt the practice of insurance companies cancelling or non-renewing policies for homeowners still grappling with recovery from the catastrophic spring 2025 storms. This action comes after the department became aware of a few companies terminating coverage for Missouri consumers actively working to complete necessary repairs.
"This bulletin is a directive that enforces the very basics of consumer protection in Missouri," said DCI Director Angela Nelson. "It is unacceptable that consumers who are already victims of devastating weather should then be subjected to this additional worry. This department will ALWAYS put the fair treatment of Missouri consumers first and will not tolerate this kind of behavior."
DCI is actively engaged in assisting Missourians in navigating the complex recovery process. Director Nelson highlighted the department's aggressive stance on consumer advocacy, noting the record-breaking success of its Consumer Affairs Division this year.
"Our mission is clear, and our work speaks for itself," Nelson stated. "We have not only acted on complaints filed with us directly by Missouri consumers, but also with consumers referred to us, including those from Senator Josh Hawley's office, to resolve their insurance issues. The dedication of our staff is evident in the historic recoveries we've achieved."
Since the start of 2025, DCI's Consumer Affairs Division has demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to protecting residents, including:
• Managing over 16,000 phone calls and over 18,000 emails from consumers seeking help with claims and companies.
• Successfully recovering over $28 million on behalf of Missouri consumers. This amount already far exceeds last year's record-breaking recoveries of $22.6 million.
