Fine art programs are leaving their mark on our town and continue to gain recognition on the local and national level. This week we feature the choral department as the second in a three-part series.

The choral program is no stranger to success as multiple accomplishments have been attained over the past five or so years.

Choir accomplishments include: State 1 Ratings for Chamber Singers - 2011, 2013-17 and 2013 and 2015 for Concert Choir; National Gold Ratings - 2014, 2016, 2017; Carnegie Hall - 2015, 2018; SCA Champs - 2014, 2016, 2017; and several college-bound musicians. A few students participate in both choral and instrumental music at the high school.

There are 80 voices in the Salem Middle School choir, 44 in concert choir, and 28 in Chamber Singers.

Students traveled to All-District Choir auditions Saturday.

Activities the choir participates in year-round are national anthems at most indoor sporting events and other community events, as well as baccalaureate and graduation.

December is a very busy month for the Chamber Singers as they will sing at the Echo Bluff Tree Lighting Ceremony, Trees & Trains at ONCRC, the Victorian Christmas at Bonebrake performance, and a holiday concert. Spring sees a variety of recitals and festivals, both for soloists, ensembles, and choirs.

Elaine Russell, a former Chamber Choir member herself, has led the team to success in her seven years as choral director.

Russell attributes much of the success in recent years to the early musical education provided by choral educators, such as Mrs. Beasley, Mrs. Cartwright, and Mr. Jett.

“They built this foundation for many of our choral students,” said Russell.
