The Headrick family has been named Dent County's 2011 Farm
Family.
They were chosen by the Dent County University of Missouri
Extension Council for their dedicated involvement in 4-H and the
agriculture industry in the county. They will attend Missouri State
Fair Farm Family Day Aug. 15.
The Headricks are lifelong Dent Countians, growing up on family
farms near Salem. Nathan is a native Dent Countian and Sandra's
family moved here when she was 12.
They are graduates of Salem High School. Nathan graduated in
1985 and Sandra is a 1986 graduate.
Nathan retired from Larson Collision Center and is now a
fulltime farmer operating Quarter Moon Farms, a crossbred and
registered Angus cow/calf operation and horse farm on both his and
Sandra's family farms.
The Headrick's farm has also been host to and a sponsor of Dent
County Desperados Countywide 4-H Horsemanship for the past three
years.
Sandra is a 14-year Nurse Practitioner, member of the Dent
County Health Board and member of the Oak Hill R-I School Board of
Education.
The Headricks have two children, Hannah, 12, and Clayton, 6.
Both are members of the Lake Spring 4-H Club.
Hannah is a seventh grader at Oak Hill R-I School, a seven-year
4-H member and is involved in the market steer and hog projects,
the country ham project and 4-H horsemanship. She recently earned
her black belt in tae kwon do at Corey's ATA in Salem.
Clayton is a first grader at Oak Hill. He has been active in
Lake Spring Clover Kids for two years. He has a bucket calf project
and is involved in 4-H Horsemanship.
Along with the 4-H animal projects, both Hannah and Clayton help
out on the farm with the cattle and horses.
Both have shown and plan to again show their 4-H project this
year at the Dent County Fall Festival in August.
The Dent County Extension Council chose the Headricks because
they are among the county's most involved 4-H families and the kids
have shown 4-H livestock projects.
The whole family helps out with the family's commercial cow/calf
operation on their farm in southern Dent County.
They work with their 4-H projects when possible to get their
livestock acquainted with the show-ring grooming process, which
requires a lot of time and effort. Every member of the Headrick
family helps out on the farm to ensure the best output possible
from their animals.
The Headricks believe it is important to raise family in a rural
environment and in church to establish a firm foundation to enable
them to be successful in what they do now and in their future.
As this year's Dent County Farm Family, they are invited to
attend the Farm Family Day Dinner at the State Fair in Sedalia.
The Farm Family's trip to the State Fair is sponsored by Dent
County Farm Bureau and Extension. Farm Family Day is sponsored by
University Extension, the University of Missouri-College of
Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Missouri Department of
Agriculture, Missouri State Fair and Missouri Farm Bureau.
Farm Families are chosen based on suggested guidelines including
their involvement in agriculture; support of University Extension
programs; community involvement; support and participation in farm
youth organizations, such as 4-H and FFA; and interest in
representing the county at the Missouri State Fair.
