Two separate incidents involving a self-inflicted stabbing and shooting have been reported by the Dent County Sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office was requested to assist the Missouri State Highway Patrol with investigating an accident Monday in the 8500 block of Highway 19 South. After a short investigation, it was determined that a 53-year-old Salem man had attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head at a residence in the 9000 block of Highway 19 South.
The man then left the residence in a vehicle and crashed a short distance away, according to the report. He then fled into a field before law enforcement’s arrival. A search was conducted, and he was located in a patch of woods. He was transported to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for medical treatment. This incident is still under investigation.
Then Tuesday, at approximately 8 p.m., a woman contacted the Dent County Sheriff’s Office requesting an ambulance at Dent County Road 2390. She stated she needed an ambulance for her 40-year-old son who had a laceration to his arm, according to the report.
Her son had been drinking when he grabbed a knife and stabbed himself, the report said. The ambulance arrived on the scene and attempted to treat the individual. His mother informed the ambulance crew that her son had made suicidal statements and had tried to leave the residence after he stabbed himself.
During the entire duration of the call, the male was angry, combative and displayed aggressive behavior, the report says. He was transported to the emergency room by a sheriff’s deputy.
The male was released to SMDH, where he was treated for his injuries and was held on a medical hold for mental evaluation.
An earlier report from the sheriff's department stated that while waiting for the hospital to find him a room at another facility, the male fled the hospital on foot. A correction from the sheriff's department was sent Tuesday saying the man was discharged last Wednesday and was allowed to leave the hospital in a hospital gown.
A woman driving on Highway 72 called the sheriff’s office and reported a male in a hospital gown walking on Highway 72. Law enforcement responded to the scene and attempted to locate the individual, which met with negative results. The man was not under law enforcement control.
The sheriff's office did not release the identity of either man. No charges have been filed on the stabbing case, according to sheriff Bob Wells. Wells says charges are pending on the shooting incident and no name will be released until charges are filed, since the case is still under investigation.
