An Oklahoma man lost his life Saturday as a result of a one-vehicle crash in Dent County that occurred 10 miles south of Salem on Highway 19, according to an online report of Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Stephen O. Gayle, 71, of Cleveland, Oklahoma, was declared deceased at 2:27 p.m. Saturday by Dr. Stephen Probst at Cox South Hospital in Springfield. His next of kin has been notified.

The report states Gayle was southbound at 11:40 a.m. Saturday operating a 2015 Kawasaki ZG1400 when it struck a deer and ejected Gayle off the vehicle.

The Kawasaki sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.

The highway patrol was assisted on the call by the Dent County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident is Troop I’s fourth fatality for September and 23rd for 2020.
