Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles stayed in office this election with less than half of the votes in the county. Skiles turned back two challengers in the Republican primary election Aug. 2, scoring 42% of the vote—he faces no opposition in the November general election.
In November, Skiles will officially enter into his seventeenth year as presiding commissioner.
Skiles told The Salem News that he plans to continue serving as long as he is able.
At Thursday's regular county commission meeting, The Salem News asked Skiles what plans he has for the county going forward.
Skiles said that he greatly appreciated voters coming out to support him.
“I’m humbled by the trust and confidence the county continues to show,” said Skiles.
“I love Dent County, I’ve always thought Dent County is a good place to call home,” he said. “It was a great place to raise my kids [and] I hope to do what I can to make it a great place to raise my grandkids,” said Skiles. Skiles said that he thinks Dent is one of the best places in the world and he hopes to see it stay that way. “We stand for all the right things,” he said.
“It hasn’t been easy,” said Skiles. “There’s more to this job than what many people might think,” he said.
