The City of Salem’s current budget includes an $18,000 line item for Fourth of July fireworks—at Thursday’s finance committee meeting, members and aldermen discussed that it may not be a wise use of city funds while navigating financial difficulties this year, unless the city can find another way to cover the cost.
Alderwoman Kala Sisco, who chairs the committee, mentioned that one possible way to fund the fireworks might be for the city to sell sponsorships.
Also during discussion, committee members talked about how there may be event possibilities surrounding the fireworks.
Police chief Joe Chase mentioned the idea of working with one of the regional breweries or wineries to have a sort of beer garden at the event. He mentioned that Cuba and other places have success with such events not only covering costs, but actually generating revenue for the city. Chase also mentioned the idea of bringing in a big name musician to town and selling tickets.
No one at Thursday’s meeting wanted to cancel the Fourth of July fireworks; however, those at the meeting came to the general consensus that funding options need to be explored.
Sisco, who also chairs the community service committee, said that she would bring this before members in order to explore the city’s options.
