Veteran Montauk Angler Oran C. Naramore fired the pistol shot signifying the beginning of trout fishing at Montauk State Park as hatchery manager Tom Whelan (right) counted down to the 6:30 a.m. start time.

Anglers flocked to Montauk State Park on March 1 for opening day of trout fishing. According to general manager Melissa Wildhaber, the park's hatchery released 5,500 trout on opening day.

Miss Salem 2020 Sierra Rusco assisted fishermen with checking weights for the lunker board. Robert Clifton, of Perryville, has been fishing at Montauk for close to 40 years. His lunker hit the board weighing 4 lbs. 6 oz.

Brent Shewmaker, of Moweaqua, Illinois has been fishing at Montauk for close to 30 years. As of 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, 14 lunkers were already listed on the lunker board at the lodge.

Pete Frazier, of Cape Girardeau, reeled in his first lunker, a rainbow weighing 3 lbs. 4 oz. Frazier has been coming to Montauk for about 25 years.
