Alderwoman Kim Steelman was selected by the board of aldermen as mayor of the City of Salem by unanimous decision Monday night during a special called meeting, leaving her East Ward alderman position vacant.
“I’m honored to be in this position, I take it very seriously and I’m excited to see where we go from here,” said Steelman.
Steelman replaces former mayor Brad Nash, who resigned Friday, effective immediately. He cited personal reasons.
After the Monday meeting Steelman told The Salem News, “I have a lot of things that I want to do. My main priority is to be the voice of Salem, I’m an average person. I have four children in the community and my husband works a blue-collar job. I’m not afraid to make difficult decisions.”
Also at the meeting the board voted to move the regular meeting time for the board of aldermen to the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. Meetings have been held ago 7 p.m. the first and third Mondays.
The next regularly scheduled meeting will be 6 p.m. Sept. 14.
Steelman told The Salem News that she plans to have a special meeting to select an alderperson for the vacant position before the next regularly scheduled meeting.
Steelman will serve as mayor until the April 2022 election.
