Salem sophomore Ashton Bowers drives to the basket for two of her 29 points in the Lady Tigers' season-opening win.

Salem opened the season Friday as it played host to Northwest, and behind a 29-point night from sophomore Ashton Bowers, beat the Lady Lions 61-23.

Salem took a 33-18 lead at halftime before surrendering just five points in the second half en route to the win.

The Lady Tigers and Lady Lions traded baskets early in the first, but Salem took control by the end of the quarter with a 16-9 lead. Bella Jadwin and Bowers scored seven points apiece in the quarter to go along with two points from Makayla Roos. The second quarter played out much like the first, with Salem using a strong finish to the half to lead 33-18 at the break. Bowers picked up another 12 points, while Jadwin scored five points.

Salem would put any remaining doubts to rest in the third quarter with a dominant 22-3 effort to take a 55-21 lead. Bowers scored eight points, Savannah Manthey seven and Tatum Hatridge five. The Lady Tigers continued to put on the clamps on the defensive end in the fourth. Bowers, Roos and Hatridge all scored two points in the fourth.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to host Plato Monday at 6 p.m. in a varsity-only contest. Vouchers will be needed for entry. The JV will travel to Bunker Nov. 30 for a JV-only contest.

Bowers led Salem with the 29 points and had five rebounds and four steals. Jadwin scored 14 points and had five rebounds and five steals.

Hatridge got seven points and five rebounds; Manthey seven points, four rebounds and five assists; Roos four points, three rebounds and three assists; Avery Erway five rebounds and Fayth Kaminski three rebounds.
