The Salem Lady Tigers faced off against the Hartville Lady Eagles last Wednesday, Dec. 30 in the championship game of the 16-team Mountain Grove Tournament.
Salem jumped out to a lead in the first quarter. But Hartville took the lead by halftime. The Lady Tigers cut the Lady Eagles lead to two points several times in the second half, but could not reclaim the lead as Hartville used a 60% field goal percentage in the game to hold off a Salem comeback and win 60-51.
Salem took the lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter and would lead by a score of 12-11 after one. Ashton Bowers led the way for Salem with nine points in the first, Savannah Manthey scored two points, and Avery Erway added one point. Hartville’s best quarter of the night came in the second, outscoring Salem 17-10 to take a 28-22 lead at halftime. Erway led the Lady Tigers with five points in the quarter, Bowers added three points, and Manthey chipped in two points.
The Lady Tigers cut into the Lady Eagles lead in the third with a 20-19 effort to make it 47-42 going to the fourth. Salem was led in the third by Manthey with nine points, while Bella Jadwin scored five, Bowers scored four, and Erway added two. Salem got within one possession several times in the fourth, but could not retake the lead. Hartville would hit their free throws in the final minute to take the quarter 15-9 and win by a score of 60-51. Manthey led in the fourth with five points, while Erway and Tatum Hatridge scored two points apiece.
The loss moves Salem’s record to 8-4 on the season. Ashton Bowers and Savannah Manthey were selected for the All-Tournament Team.
Also Dec. 30, Willow Springs stopped Eminence 49-43 in the third-place game; Dora clipped Bradleyville 35-31 in the fifth-place game, and Gainesville whipped host Mountain Grove 50-30 in the consolation finals.
In the semifinals Tuesday, Dec. 29 Salem defeated Willow Springs 68-62. In the first round the Lady Tigers downed Seymour 73-46 Dec. 26.
This week the Lady Tigers were to begin SCA play Monday at home against the Cabool Lady Bulldogs.

The Salem Lady Tigers faced off with the Willow Springs Lady Bears in the semifinals of the Mountain Grove Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The contest was a rematch of a semifinal contest in the Norwood Tournament, in which the Lady Bears topped the Lady Tigers en route to a tournament championship. Tuesday afternoon’s contest would go down to the wire, with the Lady Tigers sealing the game at the free throw line in the final minute to win 68-62.
Salem jumped out to a fast start in the first quarter, due in large part to a barrage of three-pointers, to take a 17-13 lead after one. The Lady Tigers hit five three-pointers in the first quarter, as Ashton Bowers scored eight points, Savannah Manthey scored six points, and Bella Jadwin scored three points. Salem extended their lead in the second quarter with a 21-17 effort. Manthey led the way for the Lady Tigers in the quarter, scoring thirteen points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to put Salem up 38-30 at half. Avery Erway scored six points as well, while Bowers added two points.
Willow Springs’ best quarter of the game came in the third, outscoring Salem 16-11 to cut the Lady Tiger advantage to 49-46. Jadwin led Salem's attack in the third with six points, Bowers scored three points, and Erway chipped in two points in the quarter. The Lady Bears continued to chip away at the Lady Tiger lead in the fourth, eventually taking a 61-58 lead on a corner three-pointer. Salem answered with a three of its own from Manthey on the next possession to reclaim a lead it never relinquished. The Lady Tigers hit eleven of fifteen free throws in the quarter to seal the 68-62 victory. Manthey scored seven points in the quarter, Jadwin added six, Tatum Hatridge scored three, Fayth Kaminski chipped in two points, and Bowers picked up one point.
