The Salem Lady Tigers kicked off their season with a road trip to Plato on Monday night, Nov. 25. Using its depth and an aggressive defensive approach, Salem was able to stifle Plato throughout the first half, opening up a 34-14 lead at intermission. The lead would hover around twenty points the rest of the way, as the Lady Tigers went on to win by a final score of 69-49.
Salem jumped on Plato early in the first quarter, taking a 5-0 lead in the opening minute to set the game tempo. The Lady Tigers continued to apply pressure throughout the quarter and led by a score of 21-7 after the one. Six players would score in the quarter for Salem, with Savannah Manthey and Ashton Bowers scoring five points apiece, Bella Jadwin adding four points, Tatum Hatridge scoring three points, and Madison Woolf and Shelby Botkin chipping in two points each. Salem continued to lock up Plato on the defensive end in the second quarter, taking it 13-7 to lead 34-14 at halftime. Manthey picked up seven points in the quarter, Cayleigh Moody added three points, Jana Cook scored two points, and Hatridge and Woolf added a point apiece.
The Lady Eagles began to find some success in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Tigers 19-18 to make it 52-33 going into the fourth. Hatridge and Woolf paced Salem's attack with five points each, Bowers and Jadwin scored three points apiece, and Nina Howard picked up two points. Salem would take the fourth quarter by a score of 17-15 to win by a final of 69-49. Jadwin led the way with six points in the fourth, Bowers and Manthey each scored three points, Cook and Makayla Roos scored two points apiece, and Woolf added one point.
The win puts Salem at 1-0 on the season with the home opener December 5th against Owensville up next. The JV played a two-quarter contest and fell by a score of 31-19. Makayla Roos led with fourteen points and Avery Erway scored five points.

“Defensive intensity and rebounding effort has to be what we hang our hat on and we did a pretty good job of that in the first half. Our defensive intensity slipped a little in the second half, which is something we as coaches and players have to work on. It’s the first game so there is going to be stuff to work on, but overall I'm really happy with the effort level.”
