Despite a huge night from the 1-2 scoring duo of junior guard Gunnar Konkel and sophomore guard Bryson May the Salem High School boys’ basketball team stayed winless, falling at Eldon 69-63 in non-conference action Jan. 7.

Salem fell to 0-11 while the Eldon Mustangs ran their win streak to three and improved to 6-8.

The loss wasted a big game from Konkel, who after being shut out over the first quarter erupted for 32 points the rest of the way, including four 3-pointers. Konkel and E. May combined to score 53 of the Tigers’ 63 points, with B. May adding 21.

Eldon took a 15-10 lead after the first quarter. Salem outscored the Mustangs 18-16 in the second period to trim its halftime deficit to 31-28.

Despite nine points by Konkel, the Tigers lost ground in the third quarter, being outscored 16-14 in the period.

Eldon took a 47-42 lead into the fourth quarter and would keep the advantage despite Konkel’s 15 points and three treys the rest of the way.

The Mustangs also had an effective 1-2 scoring punch, as sophomore Hunter Hees finished with 25 points and freshman Gardner Casey 19.

This week the Tigers are to play Friday at Cabool in SCA play (6 p.m.).
