A 13-year-old male was found dead of a gunshot Saturday, according to a report from the Dent County Coroner's Office.
The death appears to be accidental, according to the report issued Sunday.
According to the investigation by the Dent County Sheriff’s Office, the boy was found dead, surrounded by a large pool of blood. A Glock pistol was found next to his body.
In front of the deceased, there was a cellphone propped up against a flashlight on a small table. The camera of the phone was active and was currently on a website called omegle.com, which is a video chatting service that matches with strangers.
The boy was visiting his grandfather from Georgia. His grandfather was not present at the time of his death, and his body was found by a neighbor who stopped by to check on him. The sheriff’s department contacted the grandfather and spoke about the circumstances of the boy’s death. The grandfather indicated that his grandson was familiar with how to operate firearms.
Detective Matt Atkinson, who investigated the case, told The Salem News Tuesday that he had inferred that the boy was likely showing off the guns online when he accidentally discharged the weapon. Atkinson said that upon investigation there was no indication that the boy intentionally took his own life.
An autopsy will be performed by the Boone County Medical Examiner's office.
The coroner assisted the Dent County Sheriff's Office on the call. No other information was contained in the release and the boy nor the grandfather were identified.
