Salem Police Department released information today (Monday) regarding scam calls portraying the city utility office.
"We have had reports of calls going out from the City of Salem Utility Office asking people for their Social Security numbers and identifiable information," said the report.
This is a common scam used to steal identities and solicit information from citizens. Oftentimes scammers pose as the local utility office, police department, IRS, etc.
They use a telephone number generator to mask the call under a legitimate number.
Be aware not to give any information like this over the phone as these offices would never ask those questions of people via a telephone conversation.
