A Salem man faces three sex crime charges for incidents alleged from 2017 to earlier this month, according to documents filed in circuit court.
Scott E. Mayberry, 40, is charged with felony counts of second-degree statutory sodomy and fourth-degree child molestation of a child less than 17 years of age and offender greater than four years older. Mayberry is additionally charged with one misdemeanor count of first-degree sexual misconduct. His bond was set at $500,000.
A detective with the Dent County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation Dec. 9 after a victim reported sex crime allegations against Mayberry, according to the case’s probable cause report. The victim told law enforcement several incidents of inappropriate touching had occurred involving Mayberry, one as recent as Dec. 4 and others dating back to December 2017 when the victim was 15 years old.
The report includes details of a recorded conversation between the victim and Mayberry during which he described engaging in sex crimes.
During a subsequent interview at the sheriff’s office the report states Mayberry both admitted and denied the allegations against him while changing his statements several times.
