Funeral service for John L. Schafer was July 13, 2019 at James & Gahr Mortuary Chapel, Salem, with Pastor Tim Hill officiating.
Interment was in the Green Forest Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
Pallbearers were JD Steelman, AJ Seay, Steven Sewell, Chad Smith and Jeff Cawthon.
Mr. Schafer was born February 27, 1924 in Bunker to William Calvin and Stella (Williams) Schafer. He married Esther Mooney May 4, 1946. They were the parents of one daughter. Mr. Schafer died July 10, 2019 at the age of 95 years.
Survivors include his children, Pat Dittman and husband, Karl, Salem; granddaughter-in-law, Stephanie Dittman, Salem; great-grandchildren, Mallorie and Dawson Dittman, both of Salem; sister-in-law, Zelda Schafer, Salem; and a host of extended family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Esther Schafer; brothers, Arvil, Willis, Lesley, Arnold “Toad” Schafer; sisters, Ruth Watson, Alice Tinker, Ellen Light and Carrie Wisdom; and grandson, David Dittman.
Mr. Schafer served in the United States Army during WWII. He was awarded many medals for his service that include two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Mr. Schafer was a member of the Salem Masonic Lodge #225 A.F. & A.M. for over 52 years and was very active in district 29.
