A Breast Cancer Awareness Month walk is planned for Oct. 1 around the courthouse square. The noon walk will start at the Salem Community Church grounds and take about 15 minutes.

The walk is the highlight of a month of awareness activities sponsored by the Salem Memorial District Hospital Foundation.

“That’s our biggest thing,” said Julie Malone, SMDH mammography coordinator. “We’d really like to have as much participation from the community as we can to help raise awareness.”

Proceeds from the walk and other activities go into the foundation’s Mammography Fund. The foundation has also been selling t-shirts and is planning a silent auction at SMDH on Oct. 17 to benefit the fund.

“Through fundraising last year, we were able to offer free mammograms to 47 uninsured women, so we hope to provide more this year,” she said. The foundation received the Community Health Service Award last year for providing the mammograms.

Anyone interested in participating in the walk should be at the church at 11:45 a.m. No pre-registration is required. Walkers are encouraged to wear pink.

“Police are going to escort us down Fourth Street and around the courthouse,” Malone said. “Any survivors can contact me as well if they want to be involved in it.”
